Review: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
I have just completed the book ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ and decided to review it.
Mikael Blomkvist, a journalist who has just lost a libel case under murky circumstances is hired by Henrik Vanger, an ex industrialist to investigate the disappearance of his great-niece, Harriet 40 years ago. Unknown to Mikael, Vanger had him checked by Lisbeth Salander, a freelance investigator for Milton Security who always is an awesome hacker. The story then follows these two main protagonists and how they come together to solve the mystery of mysterious disappearance of Harriet Vanger.
Larsson’s writing is a treat if you ask me. Its pretty easy to follow and intriguing. The actual plot is something that you can rank in the ‘good thriller’ list… its absorbing. His attention to details is something I enjoyed especially when it came to the Vanger family. The other thing about the book I liked was that he speaks his mind through the book and you can understand what all he stands for and what he opposes as you read the book.
The biggest criticism every one has about this book is that it’s misogynistic. And I m not denying it, it is but isn’t that expected when you pick up a book originally titled ‘Men who hate Women’? The point that I oppose is that Larsson is misogynist. Infact he is quite the opposite, he is lashing out at misogyny and it’s pretty much evident in his writing. Yes, the extreme graphic nature of rapes give you creeps and make you want to take showers but then again I had expected that given the title.
Of course this book isn’t perfect. It has its drawbacks too. Its major draw back if you ask me comes in form of length. There are many times that you feel that the book is been dragged especially in the end. The other thing is that you can hardly empathize with any character (may be just Henrik). I mean Mikael is pretty much a good guy and would have been my favorite if not for his flaw of sleeping around. Call me old fashioned but I can’t digest the things like open marriage and casual sex. Salander is mysterious Ofcourse and sometimes awesome (especial the time when she gets her revenge) but something in her makes you stay wary of her. I hope that this dissolves when I read the 2nd book. But my biggest complaint from the book is something I can’t talk without spoiling it. May be you will understand when you read the book.
Anyways, pick this book up if you like a good thriller but stay away from it if you can’t handle the graphic nature of sexual assault on women and children.

I got this for my 22nd birthday (wow I just realized I read it a LONG time back!) and I found it ok. It wasn’t great, but yes, it did keep the interest there. About the graphic scenes, atleast I’ve had worse, so it was fine. Done delicately infact. And yes, this remains the best one out of the trilogy, so well.. 🙂
Cheers,
Annie.
P.S: Review some classic na, I haven’t read many of those and it would be an interesting post.. 🙂
Harini
Will do it soon. Thanks for the Idea 🙂

A very different review as opposed to that of AK’s. Anyway, I’ve already gotten hold of the book so I would check for myself 🙂
Harini
Yeah this is probably few of those lesser times me and AK disagree.

“Sexual assault on women and children?”
That does sound like it’s gonna give me the creeps. But I heard a lot of interesting reviews. Is it anything like the movie?
Harini
I havent seen the movie yet. Is it good?
Psych Babbler
Yeah I quite liked the book despite the themes it deals with…or rather, because of the themes. You can clearly see that Larsson stands up against abuse of women. Salander is his way of doing that as is Blomqvist.
And I didn’t get your biggest complaint despite reading the book…what is it??
Harini
Well the fact that it was all hushed up.
Tanishka
I have been thinking to read this one for a while… I think its time to start it…

Swaram
I have read mixed reviews for this book, some saying it’s really bad!
Am gonna wait for some more time before I buy it 🙂
Harini

Anu
Not again! I’m bored with reviewing this book! It’s an over-descriptive novel! I was waiting to finish this book and throw it in garbage…truly this was my feeling! Author could’ve controlled his over-doing of rape scenes! His words had lot of vulgarity, & thoughts were pervert’ish! I wouldn’t recommend this book!
Harini
I agree it is over descriptive but I dint find it pervertish because I expected that. SO was ready for it.
Avada Kedavra
Commenting late, though I read it the day you posted it.. I dont know why, but did not like his writing style or the language (maybe because it is a translation), I found it pretty boring and dragging.. what could have been written in 10 pages have been dragged to 50 pages..
Btw what’s your biggest complaint? My biggest complaint are the rape scenes.. he need not have explained how a person is raped..there was lot of vulgarity and pervertish like Anu said above.
Harini
Not the rape scenes… I was aware of them but I was angry because everything was swept under the rug you know. No justice and thats my biggest complaint.
Avada Kedavra
pervertishness* (typo)
Avada Kedavra
pervertedness* (typo-2) 😛
Harini
Still I make more Typos than you 😛
A
I will probably read the book. Thanks for the review. It is a good review with clear description of what to expect.
Harini
Thanks A 🙂
Reenie
Nice review; though it’s not exactly my cup of tea :)- the book, I mean- not the review.
Wanted to tell you that I finished Eat, Pray, Love. That’s not my thing either. Oh, how I wish for a GOOD book!
Harini
